November 29 Electoral Area Directors Committee | Community Planning Engagement Summary & Next Steps

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the Community Planning Engagement over October and November 2023! We heard from approximately 300 community members at the workshops and open houses held throughout the ACRD, and the online survey had almost 250 responses. We are very grateful for all of the thoughtful input and engaged conversation about community values and interests in each of the Electoral Areas.

A summary of the community input received (highlighting the trends identified on the key topics discussed throughout the region) has been compiled, and a report will be presented to the Electoral Area Directors Committee on November 29 (agenda and supporting documents available here: www.acrd.bc.ca/events/29-11-2023/). More information is available on the Community Planning Engagement webpage.

Help shape the future of your community!

Tell the ACRD what you think your community (Bamfield, Beaufort, Long Beach, Sproat Lake, Beaver Creek, and Cherry Creek) should look like now and in the future.

Take the survey by November 12 (scroll down on this page).

Join us at an interactive workshop and open house to explore what you think your community should look like now and in the future. Tell us about your community values and interests, and discuss opportunities and challenges in your area.

All six workshops and open houses will be the same time and format. Drop in any time between 4 and 7 pm to explore community planning information. The workshop will begin at 5:30 pm with facilitated table discussions on different community topics.

Join us between 4 and 7 pm at the following workshops and open houses, with facilitated table discussions beginning at 5:30 pm:

  • Beaufort Electoral Area 'B' | Tuesday, October 10 at Beaver Creek Community Hall
  • Cherry Creek Electoral Area 'F' | Thursday, October 12 at Cherry Creek Community Hall
  • Beaver Creek Electoral Area 'E' | Monday, October 16 at Beaver Creek Fire Hall
  • Sproat Lake Electoral Area 'D' | Monday, October 23 at Sproat Lake Community Hall
  • Long Beach Electoral Area 'C' | Monday, November 6 at Ucluelet Community Centre
  • Bamfield Electoral Area 'A' | Thursday, November 9 at Bamfield Community School

The ACRD wants to hear from community members from each Electoral Area about specific land use concerns and ideas for improvements, and discuss whether the current Official Community Plans (OCPs) effectively communicate the community vision. Each ACRD Electoral Area has its own OCP, which were developed collaboratively between 2007 and 2014 with local Advisory Planning Commissions (APCs), Electoral Area Directors, and the ACRD Board of Directors in consultation with community members.

Discussion topics will include:

  • OCPs and Zoning Bylaws
  • Recreational Vehicles (RVs), Accessory Dwellings Units (ADUs) and Housing
  • Off-street Parking and Docks
  • Home Occupations and Home Industry
  • Agriculture and Animals

The ACRD will be looking for community input on topics such as: community visioning to support comprehensive rewrites to each Electoral Area Official Community Plan (OCP), key discussion topics identified through the Zoning Bylaw Review engagement, and whether the ACRD maintains one current Zoning Bylaw No. 15, or develops individual area Zoning Bylaws.

Upcoming activities will include in-depth community engagement to hear from residents and property owners in each Electoral Area, and provide more information on the different kinds of land use planning tools available:

Please contact Planning staff with any comments or questions in the ACRD office, by email communityplanning@acrd.bc.ca, or phone 250-720-2700.
