West Coast Transit service is hitting the road this April!

Starting on April 2, 2024, a new regional public transportation service is launching on the West Coast. Connecting the communities of Ucluelet, Tofino, hitac̓u, Ty-Histanis and Esowista, West Coast Transit will run seven days a week, with the exception of statutory holidays.

For more information about the service, including where and when it runs and how to buy tickets, head to www.acrd.bc.ca/wc-transit.

Thank you to all who participated in the West Coast Transit survey! Your input helped to inform the final schedules and routing for the service. Please check out the West Coast Transit Engagement Summary for an overview of the results.

Project Overview

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD), in collaboration with its West Coast Committee member First Nations, municipalities, and agencies, has been developing an interim public transit service to connect the District of Tofino and Resort Municipality of Ucluelet (as well as intervening ACRD Electoral Area “C” and Parks Canada areas), with the option of also connecting to the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government community of Hitacu.

Currently, the implementation of a BC Transit-administered service on the West Coast has been delayed due to lack of the provincial share of funding. Therefore, the ACRD has been developing an interim public transit service that can be implemented until such time that the provincial government can contribute funding. This interim transit service is envisioned to be a basic level of service that can be locally funded and developed with the support and involvement of key community, transportation, health, and hospitality stakeholders in the area.

Project Objectives

The overall objectives of the West Coast Transit Implementation are to:

  • To review and update any planning work and community-related information gathered to-date to confirm potential service model(s), operating structure, and costs for an interim West Coast Transit option.
  • Understand the transportation needs and opportunities for residents.
  • Determine how connections to key local destinations can be delivered, coordinated, and optimized as effectively as possible, including potential partnerships with identified community/transportation contacts.
  • Develop and deliver a final interim transit service solution that describes recommended service levels, projected operating and capital costs, operating models, and potential funding sources and partnerships to support service.
  • To identify any challenges/considerations, assess the ease of implementation of the service, and outline how the service might transition to a BC Transit service in the future.

Help us implement public transportation on the West Coast!

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD), in collaboration with its West Coast Committee member First Nations, municipalities and agencies, has been developing an interim public transit service. This service is intended to be implemented until such time that the provincial government can contribute funding towards a BC Transit-administered service on the West Coast. Based on work completed over the last few months guided by a Project Steering Committee, the project team has put together draft schedules and routing for this proposed service. We want your feedback on whether the proposed schedules will work for you and/or the people in your household who might use this service to get to work, school, appointments, shopping, recreational activities, etc.

The objective of this survey is to ensure that final schedules will get people to where they want to go within a reasonable timeframe.

The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete and will be open for responses until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16th.  All responses will be kept confidential.
