Log Train Trail Update (2026)
Project Overview
The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) is implementing the approved Log Train Trail Management Plan following approval of an updated Licence of Occupation with the Province of British Columbia and adoption of the Log Train Trail Regional Park Regulation Bylaw (find these under Documents to the right).
The project establishes a split-use framework for the Log Train Trail corridor, designating areas for motorized and non-motorized recreation while supporting long-term trail management, safety, and infrastructure improvements.
What Was Approved?
The ACRD Board approved:
- An updated Licence of Occupation with the Province of British Columbia
- The Log Train Trail Regional Park Regulation Bylaw
- A split-use management framework for the trail corridor
- Implementation of signage, communications, and access management measures
What Is Changing?
Under the approved framework:
- Motorized recreation is permitted in the northern section of the trail (KM 7.9–21)
- The southern section of the trail (KM 3–7.9) remains non-motorized
- New trail regulations establish safety requirements and user expectations
- Updated signage and access management measures will support the approved trail uses
Why Are These Changes Being Made?
The intent is to:
- Provide clear and enforceable rules for trail users
- Support public safety
- Align trail use with provincial requirements
- Support long-term management of the trail corridor
- Help reduce user conflicts through clearly designated use areas
What Happens Next?
Planned activities include:
- Public communications and education
- Installation of regulatory and wayfinding signage
- Trailhead improvements
- Access management measures
- Ongoing infrastructure maintenance and upgrades
Monitoring and Review
Trail use, safety, and implementation outcomes will be monitored as the project is implemented.
A formal review of the approved framework is expected approximately 18 months after execution of the updated Licence of Occupation.
