Can I use regular brown paper bags to line my compost bin?
C0ncerned1 asked 8 months agoSorry for the delay in responding to your question.
You can absolutely use a regular paper bag to line your green compost bin. As long as there is no wax finish on it they are completely compostable.
You can get lots of info on our website as well at www.acrd.bc.ca/organics

Jess asked about 2 years agoHello Jess - thanks for the question. Yes, this is related to the Sort'nGo Service: The ACRD has contracted AET Group Inc., an environmental consulting company, to conduct a waste composition study in randomly selected neighborhoods across the West Coast. This study identifies the quantity and type of garbage, recycling, and organics collected at the curb each week, and will help to determine future messaging to residents and inform future programs.
- AET is collecting your garbage/recycling/organics on your regularly scheduled collection day. The materials are being transferred to a facility for sorting and weighing by material type (e.g. paper, plastic etc.).
- To answer your question, no, you do not need to be concerned about personal information: the contents of all materials collected will be kept strictly confidential.
- Once this material has been sorted and weighed, it will be recycled, composted, or disposed of in accordance with the ACRD’s solid waste program.
Notification to residents did not occur prior to the study, as any prior knowledge may have altered the composition of the waste streams being studied.
Your continued participation will assist us in evaluating our ongoing waste reduction efforts with respect to the new three-stream curbside program. Should you have any additional questions or wish to withdraw from this study, you may do so at any time – please feel free to ask the auditors directly (if they’re in your neighbourhood) or reach out to the Sort’nGo line at 250-736-7678.
Thank you so much for your question!

Courtney Johnson asked over 2 years agoHi Courtney — These new uniform Sort'nGo carts will be required for weekly roadside garbage, recycling and organics collection as they've been designed to work with the automated arm of the updated collection trucks. This mechanical arm will lift and empty the new carts – rather than requiring employees to lift-and-dump bins manually. Garbage or recycling left at the roadside in other containers will not be collected beginning Dec. 5. The new garbage and organics carts also come with additional safety locking mechanisms to minimize wildlife interactions. We understand that moving to the Sort'nGo carts is a big change for residents, let us know if you have any other questions about the new program.
West Coast Commercial Organics
Beginning Dec. 1, 2023, the composting facility at the West Coast Landfill will accept organics from commercial properties. That means if you operate a business or live in a multi-unit building, you can separate your organics and send to compost.
This expanded service offers the opportunity for businesses and other commercial properties (including Multi-Family residences), to divert food and yard/garden waste from the landfill and is the next step in the ACRD’s continued work towards removing organics waste from the landfill.
What you need to know:
- Sorting: All food and yard waste are compostable, as are food-soiled papers (napkins and pizza boxes) and wood utensils. No plastics of any kind – even those labelled as compostable – can be sent to the organics’ facility.
- Transporting to the Landfill: The ACRD is unable to provide collection for commercial organics. There is no formal ‘service’ within the ACRD that gives authority to establish a collection program and collect fees for it. Commercial properties in the region who are interested in diverting organics will need to make plans for hauling to the landfill organics facility.

Vacation Rental Owners
Do you own a short-term or vacation rental that receives roadside waste collection? Making sure that waste is properly managed during stays is an important responsibility, and a unique challenge! To help keep your your guests informed, here are some resources you can use.
- Tent Cards and Magnets: The ACRD has created informational tent cards and magnets that you can pick up to display in your rental. Visit Tourism Tofino or the District of Tofino + District of Ucluelet offices for yours. Or email us at sortngo@acrd.bc.ca for more info on how to find them.
- Recycle BC Bin Signage: Visit the Recycle BC Recycling Resources page to download sorting guides for bins that will help explain what goes where to visitors.
- What Goes In/What Goes Out Guide: Keep a copy of the "What Goes In, What Stays Out" Handout on hand and on display or include it in your welcome/information package.
Remember, it's the owners' responsibility to ensure waste is managed properly. Contamination can cause loads to go to the landfill instead of being recycled or composted. Please help reduce the pressure on our waste management systems.
