Project Updates

The Area C OCP Update Engagement Survey #2 is now available at the bottom of the project page. Input from the survey, and the upcoming open house and workshop, will be used to inform the draft OCP policies.

Join us for an open house and workshop on Wednesday, August 13, from 4 to 7 pm at the Ucluelet Community Centre. This event will explore the same questions as the survey and includes roundtable discussions at 5:30 pm.

About the Project

The ACRD is currently updating the South Long Beach (Area C) Official Community Plan (OCP). An OCP establishes a community vision over a short- (five year) and long-term (10 to 20 year) period while addressing topics such as land use, housing, growth, and the environment. An OCP helps determine where people will live, work, and play, and how they move around.

The purpose of this OCP update is to establish a plan which better reflects the community’s needs and interests, while also aligning with updated provincial legislation, and other ACRD plans and initiatives.

The OCP Area

The OCP area comprises approximately 6% (27,219 ha) of the entire Long Beach Electoral Area (EA) "C" and represents the settled portion of the northwest side of Barkley Sound. This area includes the rural communities of Salmon Beach, Millstream, Port Albion, and Ittatsoo Bay.

To view the current OCP land use designations, please use this interactive ACRD web map.

EA "C" is part of the West Coast Region, which is situated on the traditional territories of the hiškʷiiʔatḥ (Hesquiaht First Nation), ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ (Ahousaht), ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation), Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet First Nation), and tukʷaaʔatḥ (Toquaht Nation), with Maa-nulth Treaty Settlement Lands neighbouring the area.

The OCP area is situated over the traditional territories of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ, Toquaht Nation, and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, and neighbours Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government and Toquaht Nation Treaty Settlement Lands.

Project Phases

The estimated project phase timeline is as follows:

  • Help create the Plan for Area "C"

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) is updating the South Long Beach (Area "C") Official Community Plan (OCP). An OCP is a policy document that establishes community direction over a short- (five year) and long-term (10-20 year) period while addressing topics such as land use, housing, growth, and the environment. For example, housing policies would outline the types of residential density supported in the OCP, informing the service standards needed for community members.

Planning staff reference the OCP while reviewing development applications, to ensure any proposals are consistent with the plan. The ACRD Board of Directors may require the applicant to allocate parkland or adjust their proposal according to the OCP.

Input from this survey will be used to inform the policy direction for Area "C". The survey will be open until the end of the day on September 2, 2025. Paper copies are available at the ACRD office, 3008 Fifth Avenue, Port Alberni. Please note that you do not need to answer all the survey questions, and any input is greatly appreciated. Additionally, all survey responses are anonymous unless you are logged into a Let’s Connect account. Survey results will be aggregated in a non-identifying manner.

Key topics from community engagement include:

    • Reconciliation
    • Parks & Recreation
    • Community Resilience, Environment & Agriculture
    • Growth Management
    • Housing & Affordability
    • Employment & Economy
    • Transportation

The personal information collected in this survey is collected in accordance with Section 26 (c, d, e) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) for the purposes of consideration regarding the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Area C Official Community Plan Update Project only. Direct any questions about the collection, use and disclosure of this information to foi@acrd.bc.ca.
