About Sort’nGo - Port Alberni

On September 13, 2021 the new Sort’nGo roadside waste collection service was launched in Port Alberni, featuring organics (food/yard waste), recycling and garbage collection by new automated trucks. Since then, residents in the City of Port Alberni have become waste reduction heroes as we continue to work together in the community to decrease the amount of waste going to landfill and transform it into nutrient-rich compost instead.

In 2020, the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) received a six million dollar grant to fund the introduction of organics collection in the City of Port Alberni, and the west coast of Tofino, Ucluelet and some surrounding communities.

Funding to support waste management upgrades, including the ACRD’s Regional Organics Implementation Project, is eligible through the Canada Community-Building Fund (formerly known as the Federal Gas Tax Fund).

Thank you to everyone for continuing to work hard at sorting items for roadside collection and helping to make the Sort’nGo efforts such a significant success. We hope you continue to use this page as a resource.

  • Split-Compartment Trucks: How Do They Work?

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link
    supporting image
Did you know Port Alberni's collection trucks can actually pick up both recycling and organics or organics and garbage (depending on your collection week) without contaminating the separate streams?

These automated City trucks have split compartments (if the trucks look new, it’s because they received a facelift with Sort’nGo decals!) The truck driver will flip a switch to activate either one compartment or the other depending on which cart is being emptied.

Once the truck reaches the landfill, materials are emptied into their appropriate transfer station bins — recycling or compost is then hauled to the proper processing facility, while garbage is disposed of at the active tipping face.

Because the compartments are separate in the truck, the three streams get collected, dropped off, and sorted independently. This means we can't mix garbage, recycling and organics in the carts — which will lead to contamination. Help us keep our streams clean and sort smarter with the Sort'nGo ACRD app: https://api.recollect.net/r/area/ACRD

Not sure what belongs? Play the sorting game on the Sort'nGo ACRD app (or desktop version here: acrd.recycle.game) and if you receive a certificate of completion between now and December 15, email a screenshot of your certificate to sortngo@acrd.bc.ca or save it as a PDF and mail it to the ACRD office at 3008 5th Ave, Port Alberni, BC V9Y 2E3. All certificates we receive between now and December 15 will go into a draw to win a free year of waste service! Learn more at: 3008 5th Ave, Port Alberni, BC V9Y 2E3. The next time you're driving behind one of our collection trucks, see if you can spot both compartments!

While many of us were busy soaking up the remaining days of summer in late August, before the hectic life of work, school, and play started up again in September, the City of Port Alberni and the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) were pounding the pavement with special deliveries.

In the heat of August, crews were dropping off over 13,000 new curbside collection carts to single-family homes as part of a progressive three-stream pickup service that’s setting a new standard for waste diversion in the region.

Along with the introduction of a third cart for organics comes a wider initiative to transition to an auto-cart system for all three waste streams, including recycling and waste.

  • A Quick Tip for Excess Fruits & Veg this Fall

This is the time of year when fallen leaves, fruit, branches and other yard waste piles up. While the green organics carts are great for disposing of these items, did you know there are other great options for getting rid of your excess fruits and veggies from the garden?

The Alberni Valley Gleaning Project will share excess garden harvest across the Alberni Valley.

If that doesn’t work for you though, and you’re choosing to compost excess food items such as fruit, please make sure the cart is no more than half full. There have been challenges with the carts being too heavy for even automated arms to lift.

Don't forget to download the Sort'nGo ACRD app to refresh your sorting skills — plus, you can play the game for a chance to win a free year of waste collection... on us! Don't have a mobile device? Use the desktop version here: https://api.recollect.net/r/area/ACRD

  • Sort'nGo Stats for September!

Since the launch of Sort'nGo on September 13, City of Port Alberni residents are busy sorting organics in their new green carts with the help of the Sort'nGo ARCD app. Now, the stats are in for the month of September:

    Schedule alerts created - 2,503
Materials searched using the Waste Wizard - 27,717

    Sorting game plays - 1,026

We're thrilled to see this level of engagement from the community, as everyone works hard to learn what and how to sort. We encourage folks to get help sorting with the Waste Wizard search tool on the app and to play the sorting game to learn where items belong.

Green Cart Items - Important Reminders

While we're currently seeing a percentage of organics being contaminated by items that don't belong in the green carts, we understand mistakes will happen during the transition phase of the new service.

As a friendly reminder, the following items do not belong in organics:

    • Keurig coffee pods (garbage)
    • Diapers (garbage)
    • Plastic bags filled with organics (no plastic bags at all please -- even those labelled compostable or biodegradable won't reliably break down and can cause contamination)
    • Rubber bands on produce and stickers (garbage)
    • Plastic ID tags from pots and planters (any plastic from gardening posts and planters needs to go in the garbage)
    • Juice boxes (Recycling Depot)
    • Cardboard in organics carts should be free of tape/plastic (tape can go in the garbage)

For more information about what can and can't go in the carts, please see our FAQs: https://www.letsconnectacrd.ca/organics/widgets/76363/faqs#13477

Contamination of our streams can be costly and will only take away from the total compost tonnage we're able to create and return to the community. If we work together, we can optimize our composting efforts and maintain a clean organics stream!

Thank you everyone for an amazing first week for Sort’nGo Organics curbside collection in the City of Port Alberni! As the new service rolls out, we want to share some important reminders:

    • Please keep all plastics, even those labelled biodegradable or compostable, out of the green bins. Why? Because without strong regulations on compostable labels there’s potential to contaminate the organics stream with microplastics. Green carts should be lined with paper only – newspapers, paper bags, or cardboard.

  • How to Dispose of Shredded Paper

Our new collection service is launching in the City of Port Alberni on September 13th, 2021!

Along with a new green cart for organics – single-family homes will receive a new blue cart for recycling.

Wondering how to recycle some items? Here’s a tip on how to dispose of shredded paper:

    Curbside

Place shredded paper in a clear plastic bag (do not use coloured or opaque garbage bags) INSIDE your blue recycling cart.

This will make it easy to pull and sort off the line at the post collection facility.

*All other items in the blue cart should be left loose.

    Depot

When depositing shredded paper at the Recycling Depots, please place shredded paper in a paper bag or cardboard box so as not to contaminate the paper stream.
